Stadium Woes

As I’m writing this, I’m riding shot gun down the Major Deegan. My first love, the Yankees, are in town tonight. I’m in the Bronx now, but will continue to make my way into mid-town Manhattan – bypassing where Yankee Stadium once stood and that other stadium pretending to be Yankee Stadium now stands.

Let me preface what I’m about to say with this: I am as hardcore Yankee fan as they come. For the last 3 years I’ve gone to just about every Yankee home game and several away games. I’ve been obsessed with the Yankees since I was a kid. They’ve shaped my life in so many ways, it’s sort of sick… The Yankees are actually a big reason I picked up and left behind my family in North Carolina and moved to New York after graduating from College.

Now that that is out of the way…

Yankees fans suck. This new stadium blows. The security is insane. Parking sucks. Monument Park is now an ugly cave. The facade is cheap looking…. Need I continue?

It is beyond me why on Earth Hank and Hal decided we needed a new stadium (Yes, I am one of those obnoxious fans that says ‘we’). Sure, the old stadium was just that… old, but that’s what made it great. The stadium itself had undergone a facelift or two, but the field itself was the same field Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gehrig, Yogi Berra, etc., etc. played on. It was magical. The stadium was always loud, no matter if it was day, night, regular season, or game 7 of the World Series.

The fans were great. They knew what they were talking about. They paid attention to the game.

In this new stadium of ours, the fans NEVER watch the game or even know what they are talking about. The only exception I’ve found is the bleacher creatures (who are thankfully still around). Yankee Stadium used to be a scary place for opposing team’s fans to dwell. My boyfriend once witnessed a 10 year old Oriole fan get a knife pulled on him, simply for being an O’s fan…. I kid you not, we were that intense. Now, fans don’t even chant the famous “a**hole” chant at opposing fans. It’s sad.

I used to LOVE talking to other fans at games, but now it seems the only people that go to Yankee games have no clue about the rules of baseball or Yankees. I cannot help but over hear some things that are being said around me at games. Half the people can’t name a Yankees player other than Jeter and the other half think a grand slam is the name of a sandwich at the local deli. Fans used to remember what happened during games… then used it as ammo for chants against opposing teams. Oh how I long for those days…

Maybe this new stadium has too many things to do. Why people would pay hundreds of dollars for tickets then go sit in a bar/restaurant within the stadium and watch the game on TV is beyond me. People roam about the open concourses hopping from the Malibu Rooftop Deck, to the Delta Sky 360 club, to the Mohegan Sports Bar and the list continues.

Here’s a novel concept… SIT DOWN AND WATCH THE GAME!

You paid $35 to park, $50+ for your ticket, $30+ for food and beer, so why not sit in your seat, watch the game and enjoy? Don’t waste your money walking around to restaurants that are open year round.

I’m just sick of it. I want the old stadium back or at least the fans that once occupied the real Yankee Stadium.

Now, I realize that I never told you why I was going to pass by Yankee Stadium today, so I’ll tell you now. Simply put, I’m cheating on the Yankees. The New York Rangers have stole my heart (at least for the time being). There is NOTHING better than being at Madison Square Garden for Rangers’ games.

Every night the arena is electric. When we score, the building literally shakes. If it wasn’t for the recent renovations to MSG, I’d worry the arena would collapse. Yes, it IS THAT LOUD.

Rangers fans are typically Yankees fans… so why are Ranger games so much better than Yankees games (in regard to the crowds)? The world may never know. My guess is hockey fans are just better.

I love sitting in the 400s at MSG. I love listening to the old guy 2 rows back shouting obscenities to opposing players and fans. I love the chatter among everyone about the game… because they are actually watching the game! It just seems like every single person in attendance at The Garden is a hardcore fan.

So tonight, I’ll be at MSG. The Bronx can wait until tomorrow. Tonight, I’ll be among fans that really care. Fans that are willing to fight for their team. Fans that live and die with each goal. Fans that don’t leave their seat until intermission. Fans that know the game... Real fans.

Great article, Brit! I have never been to a Yankees game, but always heard stories of the fans’ intensity at home. I also don’t get why people spend tons of money on tickets and don’t pay attention. Stay home! I can see why you’d cheat on the Yankees with the Rangers. Sounds like all the baseball fans have gotten lazy. Shame on them.
